The Ministry of Agriculture has received information that the male chicks produced in the poultry farms belonging to the National Livestock Development Board are not being used for any purpose and are being used to feed the pigs in the pig farms.
5000 of these animals have been given weekly to pig farms accordingly.
Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries has instructed the National Livestock Development Board to take steps to start a program to increase their daily income by providing these animals free of charge to the currently unemployed people.
Accordingly, 5000 male chicks per week have been used for pig feed so far and the National Livestock Development Board has taken steps to distribute those animals among people interested in poultry farming for meat.
National Livestock Development Board says that 50,000 male chicks have been distributed among people interested in raising animals for meat by the same board.
Meanwhile, The National Hadabima Authority has also started a program of providing free village hens with the aim of increasing egg production. Under this, 20,000 village hens have been distributed among low-income families as part of a program to develop livelihoods in the egg industry. Steps have been taken to provide 10 and 20 village chickens per family under that.
By now, the eggs of the hens distributed under that work arrangement are coming to the market and the people engaged in that industry have also got the ability to earn additional income.
A progress review discussion on the measures taken by the National Livestock Development Board and the National Hadabima Authority for livestock development was held at the Ministry of Agriculture yesterday (11) under the chairmanship of Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries.
