Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mahinda Amaraweera, stated that during today's (13th) Cabinet meeting, the government approved to provide 200 million rupees to purchase the 20,000 metric tons of milk powder currently available at the state-owned Milco (Pvt) Ltd.
Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mahinda Amaraweera, pointed out during today's Cabinet meeting that Milco, which was previously a loss-making state enterprise, has now been transformed into a profitable organization. He noted that daily milk collection has increased from 50,000 liters to 200,000 liters.
Since many institutions that previously purchased milk for dairy-related products have now stopped buying milk, efforts have been made by the Milco (Pvt) Ltd to purchase the stocks of milk possessed by dairy farmers. As a result, the daily production of the Milco (Pvt) Ltd has also increased, and the company currently has 20,000 metric tons of Highland milk powder.
Therefore, the government has taken this step with the intention of selling Highland milk powder through Sathosa.
Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mahinda Amaraweera, stated that, as per his request, President Ranil Wickremesinghe has agreed to provide 200 million rupees for the purchase of milk.
Milco has also taken steps to reduce the price of Highland milk powder, lowering the price of a 400 gram packet by 75 rupees and a 1 kilogram packet by 190 rupees, effective from last week.
