Current Situation of the National drive of Paddy Purchasing

Quantity of paddy so far purchased by the Government   - 5000 Metric Tons

• One-month paddy purchasing drive from 07 March to 08 April. Monthly purchasing target is 200,000 Metric Tons.
• Priority will be given six districts namely Ampara, Anuradhapura, Kurunegala, Polonnaruwa, Hambantota and Batticaloa.
• 366 officers are to be deployed to cover paddy purchasing in those 06 districts.
• 6000 MT of paddy to be purchased daily at the field itself on cash payment.
• Anticipated rice production in 2021 – 3000000 MT
• Annual Rice Consumption – 2340000 MT
• Excess of rice production in 2021 – 660000 MT

03 Million Metric Tons of rice can be produced from 05 Millions of Metric Ton of paddy

• Monthly rice consumption in Sri Lanka  = 195000 MT
• Quantity of rice required for one year consumption = 234000 MT

Paddy purchasing by the Government during the period of 2016-2021

• Number of PMB owned stores – 323
• Store Capacity -323 700 MT
• Store facilities are also available under co -operative network and district secretariats. As such stores are ready for storing 500000 Metric Tons.
