Poultry meat and egg production in the country reaches self-sufficient level

The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera stated that the production of poultry meat and eggs in the country has reached a self-sufficient level.

The minister made these comments while participating in a press conference held at the Ministry of Agriculture today (10).

Currently, the country’s daily egg production has increased to 07-08 million. Also, the daily consumption of eggs has grown by the same amount. As the country has been able to produce the entire amount of eggs required by the country on a daily basis, the egg prices have decreased to the level of 38-42 rupees as of today.

Also, the production of chicken meat has also increased and by now the country has grown to an excess production of chicken meat. Although the daily requirement of chicken meat is about 500 metric tons, the daily production of chicken meat has increased to 600 metric tons.

Although about 3000 poultry farms were closed due to being unable to sell their products during the last Covid 19 epidemic season, all those poultry farms are now active again. Also, there is a rapid increase in the daily production of chicken meat as all the poultry farms are used to their maximum capacity.

The price of eggs, which increased to 65 rupees a few months ago, has decreased to 38-42 rupees, and the price of chicken meat has decreased from 1750 rupees to 850-975 rupees.

The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera stated in this press conference that due to the measures taken by the government to increase the poultry production after 2022, the poultry meat and related products industry has increased.

However, the government decided to import eggs since the business community raised the price of eggs in the past. However, the minister also mentioned that if the business community does not increase the price of eggs according to their wishes, there will be no need to import eggs.
