Mr.Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries yesterday (26) stated that the Cabinet of Ministers decided to increase the amount of subsidy given for the purchase of fertilizer for paddy cultivation to 25,000 rupees from the 2024 Maha season.
The Minister stated this while addressing a press conference held at the Ministry of Agriculture today (27).
This fertilizer subsidy amount was given in the form of 10,000 rupees in this Yala season and it was previously decided to increase the amount to 15,000 rupees from next Maha season.
However, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries submitted a cabinet paper requesting to increase this amount to 30,000 rupees. Nevertheless, considering the current financial situation, the Cabinet and the Honorable President Ranil Wickramasinghe agreed to increase the subsidy amount to 25,000 rupees for the purchase of fertilizers.
In addition to this, the Minister also mentioned that steps have been taken to provide the entire amount of MOP required for paddy cultivation free of charge and therefore, the farmers will receive the entire amount of fertilizer required for paddy cultivation free of charge.
