Tea fertilizer subsidy is doubled to Rs.4000

The Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries decided today (29) to increase the subsidy of tea fertilizer from Rs.2000 to Rs. 4000.

At present, the annual production of tea in our country has decreased to 260 million metric tons and it has been targeted to increase this amount to 300 million metric tons.

Earlier, it was decided to give a tea fertilizer subsidy of 2000 rupees to encourage the growers to apply fertilizers to tea cultivation, but it has been found that the amount is not sufficient to increase the production of tea annually.

Consequently, the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera instructed the Secretary of the Ministry Mr. Janaka Dharmakeerthi to take measures to increase the tea fertilizer subsidy to 4000 rupees.

Accordingly, this fertilizer subsidy will be provided from the upcoming Maha season and currently, the State Fertilizer Company will reduce the price of tea fertilizer by 2000 rupees by another 2000 rupees.
Rs.02 billion will be spent for this subsidy and it is planned to provide that amount through the funds of Ceylon Tea Board. The Cabinet paper for this purpose is to be presented to the Cabinet today (29) by the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera.
