The amount of cultivated paddy lands where crop damage has occurred due to the prevailing drought is increased up to 51,055.19 acres as of yesterday (22). Also, the Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board has mentioned that the amount of crop damage of other crops is 424.70 acres and the amount of crop damage of paddy and other crops is 51,479.89 acres.
The daily report prepared according to the crop damage assessments made by the said board as of yesterday (22) is being sent to Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera Hon. Minister of Agriculture today (23).
Number of farmers who cultivated paddy affected by crop damages is 45,678 and the number of farmers related to other crop damages is 394 under that. The total number of farmers affected by crop damages of paddy and other crops is 46,072.
The highest amount of crop damage is recorded in Kurunegala district as of yesterday. Accordingly, it is 24,647.92 acres.
Also, number of farmers affected by crop damage in Kurunegala district is 29,472.
The second highest amount of crop damage is recorded in Udawalawe and it is 14,067 acres. Number of farmers is 5867.
Damage paddy land acreage in Hambanthota district is 1898.25 and the number of oppressed farmers is 1787. 699.75 paddy acres where paddy is being cultivated in Polonnaruwa district have been suffered from crop damages, Number of oppressed farmers is 320. 292 farmers have been affected from the crop damages occurred in 336.20 paddy acres in Anuradhapura district.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera Hon. Minister of Agriculture has instructed the Paddy Marketing Board to prepare a Note to the Cabinet to inform the Cabinet of Ministers towards the future food security due to the drought.
