The Minister of Agriculture advised not to use potato cultivated lands for any other purposes

The Minister of Agriculture, Mahinda Amaraweera instructed the officials of the Ministry not to use the potato cultivated lands to cultivate other crops or for construction purposes since those lands are very specific.

These specific lands which are suitable for potato cultivation are limited to a few areas. Out of those areas, Welimade, Nuwara Eliya and Jaffna are significant.

There is a higher demand for local potatoes than the imported variety due to its very specific taste and quality. According to the potato farmers, if other crops are cultivated in these lands there is a possibility of spreading various diseases.

Plans are underway to cultivate potatoes as 2700 Ha in 2023 Yala season and 1881 Ha in the Maha season respectively. Potato yield of 14,400 MT is expected through this cultivation. However, another 154,000 MT of potato will have to be imported.

The annual potato requirement of the country stands at 230,000MT.
