Decision to cultivate 450 acres of chillie this year under Agriculture Sector Modernization Project

It has been planned to commence a number of chillie cultivation projects covering another 450 acres within this year under Agriculture Sector Modernization Project which being foreign funded project operating under the Ministry of Agriculture.

Minister of Agriculture, Wildlife and forest Resources Conservation Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed the Project to bring same more land areas under chillie cultivation this year in order to make this country self-sufficient in chillie.

Accordingly, Agriculture Sector Modernization Project has made arrangement to cultivate chillie in 03 districts by selecting 15 acres from each district.

Accordingly, it has been planned to bring 450 acres under chillie cultivation selected from Kilinochchi, Ampara and Badulla districts.

Anticipated harvest from this project is 3600 Metric Tons.

Already chillie has been cultivated in 1600 acres under this project. It is expected to cultivate MICH – 1 hybrid variety introduced through research by the Dept. of Agriculture. It is high-yielding variety. All infrastructure facilities, required for farmers will be provided by this project under which high quality chilliee will be made available for consumption within the country.
