It has been decided to apprehend racketeers and individuals unauthorizedly occupying lands in Kebilitta Reservation and file cases against them

  It has been reported to the Ministry of Forest Resources Conservation that certain individuals in Moneragala are trying yesterday (31) and today (01) to unauthorizedly occupy lands belonging to the Kebilitta Reservation on pretext of cultivation.

  A discussion in this regard was held at the Department of Wildlife Conservation, Battaramulla in the morning today (01).The discussion was chaired by the Minister of Agriculture, Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation Mahinda Amaraweera who enquired the current situation with regard to this encroachment effort in Kebilitta Reservation.Officials pointed out that 25,000 acres of lands outside the Kebilitta forest were made available to individuals for cultivation and those people are trying to occupy reservation lands without cultivating the land given outside the Kebilitta forest.

  Officials of Wildlife Department along with members of the Special Taskforce entered Kebilitta Reservation in the morning today (01).It was reported the certain individuals were disrupting their duty.So the Minister telephoned the, DIG, Moneragala and instructed him to immediately apprehend wrongdoers and bring them to book.

  Next Maha season maize cultivation is due to commence since October.So the Minister assured that no room will be allowed to occupy lands in Kebilitta Reservation by any individual or racketeer in an unauthorized manner until landless persons are identify through a Lanka Kachcheri.

  Mrs. Chandra Herath, Secretary, Ministry of Wildlife and forest Resources Conservation and the Director General of the Dept. of Wildlife were also present at the discussion.
