Mr.Mahinda Amaraweera, the Minister of Agriculture said that measures will be taken to further reduce the price of Urea fertilizer this Yala season.
The Minister made these remarks yesterday (11) while observing the occasion of distributing fuel granted to the farmers in this country by the Chinese government.
The minister met the farmers who had gathered to get fuel at the Angunakolapelessa filling station and inquired about their farming activities.
The farmers expressed their gratitude to the Government and the Minister that the Ministry of Agriculture has taken steps to provide free TSP fertilizers (mud fertilizers) during this season.
The Minister stated that the Department of Agriculture has recommended 55 kg of TSP fertilizer per hectare and the same recommended amount will be given to the farmers free of charge.
Also, since the price of MOP fertilizer is at a high level, the government has focused on reducing the price of that fertilizer to Rs.10,000. He also said that the price of a bundle of urea fertilizer, which was given for Rs.10,000 during the Maha season, will be reduced to between Rs.7500-9000 and given to the farmers.
In addition to this, the Minister told the farmers that Rs.6500 million have been credited to the bank accounts of farmers at the rate of Rs.10,000 per hectare and the Department of Agrarian Development has made arrangements to provide another Rs.1500 million immediately to the farmers, who have not received such money so far.
The Minister emphasized that all these concessions are provided by the government to the farmers to reduce the cost of production of farmers and to protect the farmers as well as the consumers.
The farmers who expressed their views said that they are thankful to the Minister of Agriculture, the Government and the President for providing chemical fertilizers and many necessary reliefs to the farmers who have been without fertilizer for three seasons.
