Free Mud Fertilizer (TSP) for Yala Season- Fertilizer shipment to arrive at Colombo Port on the 20th of next month

The government has decided to provide the entire Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) or the Mud Fertilizer requirement free of charge to all farmers required for paddy cultivation during the coming Yala season.

Accordingly, the shipment carrying 36,000 MT of TSP fertilizer is scheduled to arrive at Colombo Port on about the 20th of next month. The Minister of Agriculture, Mr.Mahinda Amaraweera said that arrangements have been made to provide this stock of TSP fertilizer free of charge to farmers of Sri Lanka under the financial assistance of The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

A joint programme was initiated from yesterday (20) by the majority of Agronomists served in the Department of Agriculture together with the professors and experts in the universities to formulate a programme to cultivate 13 types of crops including paddy in Sri Lanka.

The Minister made these remarks while participating in a seminar held at National Agriculture Information and Communication Centre, Gannoruwa, Kandy.

This stock of TSP fertilizer is to be received from Egypt and as soon as it is received in the country, it is scheduled to be distributed throughout the island prior to the commencement of the Yala season.

The Minister also stated that since paddy cultivation starts in several Districts by the end of February action will be taken to purchase a quantity of 3500 MT of TSP available with Private companies at the expense of the government and to distribute them among farmers free of charge.

The Minister said that this Yala season is the first season during which farmers receive all fertilizers including Urea, TSP and MOP at once after 04 cultivation seasons. The Minister further said that the Ministry of Agriculture has prepared a programme to provide organic fertilizers to farmers as per their requirement and steps will be taken to provide necessary financial assistance for farmers to purchase organic fertilizers.

The Minister Mahinda Amaraweera while addressing this seminar, stated that any kind of rice shortage will not occur in the country during this year due to the fact that the country is rich with paddy harvest gained from 2022 Yala season and also from this Maha Season and there is no need to import rice in future.

The Director General of the Department of Agriculture, Mrs.Malathi Parasuraman and others participated at this occasion and the report on Recent Contribution of the Department of Agriculture for the upliftment of National Agriculture-2023 was handed over to the Minister.
