A discussion on production of organic fertilizer requirement for coming Maha season was held at the Ministry of Agriculture.
Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage , State Minister Mohan de Silva, Secretaries of several Ministries, Chairmen of State Corporations and Boards, Director Generals and officials of the Army and the Civil Security Department representing chief of staff participated at the discussion at which it was revealed that many institutions have already commenced the production of organic fertilizer. 500 kg of organic fertilizer, 5kg of plant nutrient Amonium Acid, 35kg of Patash and 10kg of bio-fertilizer have been recommended for 1 ha of paddy land. The objective of the Government is to meet the national requirement for 1.6 Million hectares through the co-ordinated effort of the all institutions concerned. In addition it has been decided to give a sum of Rs. 10,000/= for each farmer producing organic fertilizer requirement for one hectare.
Further necessary steps have been taken to provide space, technology, machinery and equipment required for organic fertilizer production. All arrangements are afoot to fulfill this national drive with concerted effort of all Estate Companies including Janatha Estate Dev. Board, Lanka Phosphate company, Land Reform Commission, Provincial Councils, Mahaweli Authority, Dept. of Irrigation, Several Ministries including the Ministry of Fishery, water Board, Co-operative Department, SL Army and Civil Security Department. Chairman of Ranaviru Sewa Authority stated that a viable program has been put into operation in this regard through the Institution with the dual objective of enhancing the economy of disabled and retired army officers. By next week all those institutions will inform their potential capacity of production.
Attention was paid at the discussion on the amount of fertilizer available by next September. The state fertilizer companies are ready to buy entire production of organic fertilizer manufactured in due standard. Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said that the aim of the Government is to make Sri Lanka the organic farming home garden of the world which provide poison free food for which co-operation of every Sri Lankan is sought for building healthy nation.
