Passion Fruit Cultivation Project to receive an income of Rs. 80,000 – 10,000 per week from ½ acre cultivation

During his observation tour of agricultural projects, Agriculture Minister MahindanandaAluthgamage inspected a successful 100 acre passion fruit cultivation in Galewela area to which 50 farmers are contributing.

Financial value of Government contribution to those 50 farmers amounts to Rs. 700,000 each under which required planting material, drip irrigation systems, land preparation and technological advises will be given to those farmers. The supporting institution is the Agriculture Sector Modernization Project. Farmers of the project have stated that they receive an income of Rs. 80,000 - 10,000 per week. Higher demand is available for passion fruit both in the local market and the foreign market. There is 200 acre successfully implemented passion fruit cultivation project in Wellawaya the Ministry of Agriculture is taking steps to boost local agriculture towards its forward march for building a production economy.
