Cost of Living Committee Chairman P.Harrison also being the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Economic Affairs, Irrigation & Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development said that tax for imported big onion has been reduced by Rs. 39.00 per 1kg of big onion.
He further stated that this decision was taken in view of the inconvenience caused to consumers due to the increase of price of big onion in the market.
Bulk price of local big onion had gone up from Rs. 250.00 to Rs. 300.00 per 1kg due to Government’s decision to increase the import tax for big onion to protect the local big onion farmer and the Indian Government’s decision to stop big onion importation due to the climate condition prevailing in that country. Therefore the Cost of Living Committee has decided to reduce the tax for imported big onion by Rs. 39.00 per 1kg from mid night today (01) as a measure of relief to consumers.
According to the figures released by the Dept. of Agriculture 75% of the harvesting of local big onion has been completed.
The committee on Cost of Living expects a price reduction of Rs.50.00 to Rs.70.00 per 1kg of big onion in the local market following this tax reduction.
The Committee states that the big onion importers have an opportunity to import big onion from countries like Egypt and Pakistan in the future.
