Minister of Agriculture, Rural Economic Affairs, Livestock Development, Irrigation and fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development P.Harrison said that the Paddy Marketing Board has already purchased 22,000 MT of paddy. So said the Minister attending a ceremony to declare open and peoplize the Maningamuwa Oyamaduwa Carpet road, Anuradhapura.
Addressing the gathering further the Minister revealed the district-wise figures of paddy purchasing during this ‘Maha’ season by the PMB – 5200 MT from Ampara district, 2500 MT from Anuradhapura,2300 MT from Kilinochchi , 2700 MT from mulathivu, 2000 MT from Vavuniya, 1700 MT from Batticaloa and 2370 MT from Hambantota district.
The highest purchasing has been reported from Ampara and Pothuvil. The second highest is from Anuradhapura and Rambewa 437 MT. Today farmers show reluctance to dry paddy. PMB has offered guaranteed price for paddy – Rs 41 per 1kg of ‘Samba’ and Rs 38/- per 1kg of ‘Nadu’ we are ready to buy paddy from them if they bring us properly dried paddy. 200 stores keep open throughout the island. The minimum purchasing which has been limited 200 MT which has been reported from Polonnaruwa. According to Saman Palitha Bandara, GM of the Paddy Marketing Board the reason is that mill owners having offered price over and above the guaranteed price.
The Minister declared open 13 Km long carpeted - stretch of the Maningamuwa Oyamaduwa road, in parallel to the ‘Ran Mawath’ road development programme of the RDA. It has been constructed at a cost of Rs.272.5 Mn.
