Our Prime Minister who placed the agriculture on the peak


The Late Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne was the 13th party member of Sri Lanka Freedom Party which was formed in 1952. He reflected a prominent progressive politician and still is living in the heart of the people. The Late D.M. Jayaratne who entered into Parliament in 1970 began his political life from Gramodhaya Saba.  He was a Member of Parliament and a Minister of the party which formed the Presidents and the Prime Ministers, and which netted the regime. He then who became the General Secretary of the party went up to the highest post in his political arena as the 14th Prime Minister of this country.          


The agriculture of this country and the reputation of D.M. Jayaratne have interconnection with each other. Dr. D.M. Jayaratne who followed the path of the Late D.S. Senanayake, the national patriot and loyalist, and Sir Hector Kobbekaduwa who held ministerial portfolios of agriculture having led this country towards the agricultural renaissance and Jayaratne who earned the esteem reputation from the people has rendered in recent past, yeomen services in grade scale, for the nation, as the Minister of Agriculture.                         


D.M. Jayaratne who stood with the people was the person who introduced fertilizer grant despite of the serious protest of the World Bank. He who served as the Minister of Agriculture made this country into self-sufficient in rice, during his tenure. It was able to export 2000 metric tons of rice in 2007 with the effective vision of his program. Introduction of crops and crops conception, implementation of pension for farmers, construction of Govisevana building complexes, recruiting of 11,000 field officers for all Agrarian Service Centers throughout the country and for the agriculture development, Dr. D.M. Jayaratne, as the Minister of Agriculture he always dedicated and served to bring the renaissance into the agricultural sector through number of projects. He was the one who brought the Ministry and its allied institutions under one roof by constructing Govijana Mandiraya Building and provided the facilities to the farmers. No doubt at all that Mr. Jayaratne who was the Minister of Agriculture, has rendered the service which would be useful in the future for the development of our farmers, by introducing ‘’Govisetha Lottery’’. Even though many threats of terrorists existed at that time, Minister of Agriculture, D.M. Jayaratne gave the life to the farmers of this country by making visits throughout the country taking all them as a challenge.    


Dr. D.M. Jayaratne was elected in 2000 as the Chairman of the World Food Organization for Asia Pacific Region since the world community highly respected his service rendered by him to agriculture. He brought global reputation to our country.  


He was able to record a new era into Buddha Sasana within the world arena by ceremonially organizing the 2600th Sambuddhathwa Jayanthiya in 2010 during his tenure as the Prime Minister and the Minister of Buddha Sasana. Dr. Jayaratne is the founder of Gampola Ambuluwawa Diversity Complex and religious places. Dr. D.M. Jayaratne who was born in 1931 in Gampola Doluwa area began his professional life as a teacher in Doluwa Vidyalaya and ended his political journey up to the Prime Minister of this country starting from Gam Saba and still is standing in the heart of the people as he did eternal services to his nation. After his entire journey, he demised on the 19th day of November 2019. Though his first death anniversary passes from us, still he is living in the heart of the people because of his yeoman services practically rendered in his political life beyond the limit realizing the problems of rural community and identifying the issues of the farmers.
