It has been decided to appointed a committee to investigate and submit a report on leasing out or unauthorized occupation of over 200 land potions owned by the JEDB.
At a meeting held today (09) at the Ministry of Agriculture chaired by Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage it was revealed that over one lakh of acres have been alienated in this manner. At the meeting it was also revealed that during the time of previous government certain lands have been given to friends of politicians and some lands are still in the occupation of politicians of the previous government. One land so alienated is in the extent of 500 acres with a tea factory in it. However only a lease amount less than Rs. 40,000 per year is received for all lands leased out depriving a large sum of income to the government. Accordingly, the Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture instructed today (09) to appoint fully authorized Committee to investigate the matter and submit a report within a month.
Following the receipt of the report of that Committee, the Ministry of Agriculture expected to request the President to appoint a Presidential Committee of Investigation to investigate the matter and to take legal action based on the recommendations of that Commission. JEDB Chairman Buwaneka D. Abesuriya with high ranking officials and officials of the Ministry of Agriculture also participated at the discussion.
