The cabinet of Ministers at its meeting held yesterday (6) decided to impose an import levy of Rs. 40/-per 1kg of imported Big onion with effect from mid night of 6th September 2021. Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage revealed this at media conference held today (07) to announce Cabinet decisions.
“The country’s big onion requirement is 290,000 MT per year while this year’s local production is 60,000 MT. The local productions are reaching the market and the 40% import levy has been imported to allow for the local big onion farmer to obtain reasonable price for their produce”. Agriculture Ministerr Mahindananda Aluthgamage said.
