One – month national drive for purchasing paddy at the field itself From 8th March up to 7th April

  • Achieving a target of purchasing 2000,000 Metric Tons within a month.
  • 366 Officers and 60 lorries to make this national drive a success.

Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage issued instructions for further strengthening of national drive for purchasing paddy at competitive price in order to mainlain a sufficient buffer stock. Accordingly, the Minister instructed relevant authorities to undertake on the spot purchasing of 200,000 Metric Tons of paddy within a month from 08 March 2021 to 7th April 2021. In this exercise priority has been given to 6 major paddy growing districts, namely Anuradhapura, Batticaloa, Ampara, Polonnaruwa, Hambantota and Kurunegala. Accordingly, 6 Regional Managers and 60 Asst. Regional Managers of the Paddy Marketing Board and 300 Agriculture Research and Production Assistants (KUPANISA Officers) are to be joined this national drive.

It has been planned to purchase 6000 Metric Tons of paddy from farmer daily by deploying 60 lorries. Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage instructed at the Ministry of Agriculture all heads of institution involved in this national drive of paddy purchasing that arrangements be made to purchase moist paddy at the field itself and make payments instantly. The Minister’s desire is to implement this twin arrangement successfully by purchasing paddy from farmers and selling rice to consumers at reasonable prices exercising fair-play and overcoming challenges posed by paddy and rice mafia.
