A special discussion with the Government Medical Officers' Association was held on 27.08.2020 (today) at the Govijana Mandhiraya Building under the chairmanship of Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Mahindananda Aluthgamage. During this discussion, it was focused on providing a cup of traditional rice porridge to school children instead of a cup of milk.
The Government Medical Officers' Association proposed a scheme as a solution to the lack of adequate milk production in the country and malnutrition among school children. Today, nutrition-related problems such as malnutrition and over-nutrition are found among school children. The risk of non-communicable diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes is also a problem that is gradually increasing among school children. During the discussion, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) pointed out that providing a cup of porridge made from non-toxic traditional local rice would be the better solution to these problems.
The Ministry of Agriculture accepted the proposal and appointed a committee to conduct a feasibility study on this project.
Retired Major General Sumedha Perera, Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture, officials from the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Agrarian Development were also present at this event.
