Mr.P Harrison , Minister of Agriculture ,Rural Economic Affairs , Irrigation and Fisheries and Aquatic Recourses Development stated that There is a possibility of paying compensation For Cultivation Damages during Maha Season 2019 Before December this year. So Said the Minister at a function held at Sumeda Vidyalaya , Gampaha on the occasion of paying compensation to Farmer in Gampaha District who suffered cultivation losses in Yala, season 2018
Speaking further the Minister stated “We Were in a position to pay compensation at the rate of Rs 40,000 per acee for the first time even without collecting Insurance Premium from farmers. Earlier this amount had been Rs 10,000/= Accordingly a sum of Rs 559.00 Million have been paid to 20,366 farmers as compensation in respect of 23,366 acres of cultivated lands subject to crop damages.
It is necessary to pay compensation for damaged cultivation Lands during ‘Maha’ Season of 2018 -2019 as well for which allocation of funds are now in progress. I expect that a sum of Rs 1,100 Mn. is needed to compensate 30,000 farmers for their damaged crop cultivation of 50,000 acres Which being historical achievement of the present Government by paying such a large amount of compensation to crop damages within a very short period of time.
Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board pays compensation to chilli ,big anion, paddy, soya bean and maize cultivating farmers for damages caused by flood, drought, wild elephant and pest At this ceremony 1576 farmers in Gampaha District Received compensation of Rs 23 million.
This ceremony was attended by Mr.Arjuna Ranathunga, Minister of Transport and civil Aviation, Mr.Ajith Mananpperuma state Ministre of Mahaveli Development and Environment and officials including Chairman of the Agrarian Insurance board also attended the function.
