Minister of Agriculture Mr. P.Harrison said that state fertilizer companies have been instructed to finalize the importation of fertilizer requirement for this ‘Maha’ season before the end of this month.
This was stated by the Minister while attending a roofing sheet- offering ceremony for farmers in the Divisional Secretary’s Division of Nochchiyagama under the programme of ensuring the availability permanent roof for law income – recipient families under “Gamperaliya” project.
Speaking further the Minister revealed that a ship carrying 30,000, MT of Urea is on its way to Sri Lanka which is scheduled to reach the port on 26 of this month whereby completing the importation of “Maha” Season fertilizer requirement.
It has been reported that the total requirement of fertilizer for “Maha” season paddy cultivation is 229,526 MT while the total paddy cultivation extent of the season is around 787,259 hectares.
“At present 148,162.9 MT of Urea, 36,530 MT of Triple Super Phosphate and 44,833 MT of Muriate of Potash have been imported for paddy cultivation in “Maha” season. The Commercial Fertilizer Company imports 40% of the requirement while “Lakpohora” company (CFC) imports 60% both being state fertilizer companies”
The Minister further revealed that, arrangements have been made to import high quality fertilizer manufactured in Russia, Vietnam and China. “Although paddy farmers experienced numerous difficulties in previous cultivation seasons due to non-availability of fertilizer on time, action will be taken to ensure timely distribution this year” The Minister assured.
